Malcolm Clarke reports on the Southampton Chess League latest, including a match in which the Chandlers Ford D team winners were all called Rob…
Both Winchester C and D teams lost matches by a 3 – 1 margin last week, with the C team losing to Ringwood and the D team losing to Chandlers Ford D. However Winchester D team captain Alan Weaver was Winchester’s sole winner in both matches, although Sammy Rebdi won a game counting for grading purposes only in the Chandlers Ford match. The Chandlers Ford winners in the match against Winchester were coincidentally all forenamed Rob namely Rob Bird, Rob Sims and Rob Strachan.
The Winchester A team achieved a good draw in division 2 against Hamble B who won this division last season with Jon Barnes on board 2 and Robin Atkins on board 5 winning their games, while on top board Jose Alfonso Jimenez Capilla drew his game.
Chandlers Ford stalwart Sam Murphy celebrated his 65th birthday at Eastleigh’s Concorde club and this was attended by some of his chess colleagues, his wife Mary and sons Sam Junior and Luke, as well as former work colleagues, former class mates, past and present neighbours and other relatives and the event was enjoyed by all who attended it.
