The John Kooner Cup 2025, formerly known as the Summer Tournament, is organised by Malcolm Clarke. John Kooner provided the original Cup, and duplicate cups for the winners to keep.
The Summer Tournament has been played each Summer for many years – since we used to meet at our former venue at Eastleigh’s Railway Institute.
Usually in the Summer Tournaments, the winner’s name is engraved on the Kooner Cup and the winner receives a replica of the Cup. John Kooner presents the trophy at a sociable get-together dinner each year. He kindly provided the original trophy and the replicas.
The John Kooner Cup is a 5-round tournament. 27 Players have entered this year’s tournament.

The John Kooner Cup 2025 Rules
- The John Kooner Cup 2025 is a 5-round swiss tournament.
- Rate of play: Either 80 mins + 10 secs or 90 mins each for the whole game. If players cannot agree on time control 90 mins is to be used.
- When the Round Pairings are announced, the first-named plays as white.
- Notify Malcolm Clarke of the results.
