Round 1 of the Summer Tournament has now been completed, and event organiser Malcolm Clarke has announced the pairings for Round 2 of the Summer Tournament. Tournament Rules and outline

The Summer Tournament is organised and run by Malcolm Clarke. The Summer Tournament is usually 5, but sometimes 6 Rounds over the summer months. Each Round is usually completed within a few weeks. The winner receives the Kooner Cup for a year and usually gets to keep a replica.

• The Games are 90 minutes all moves per player.
• When the Round Pairings are announced, the first-named plays as white.
• The games can be played online at lichess.org.
• Notify Malcolm Clarke of the results.

Chandler’s Ford Chess Club member Maha Chandar has played for England in International games online! She played in an individual capacity in the ECU Girls’ and Women‘s Chess Weekend Finals under 1300, coming 5th, and as part of the England Women team in the International Girls and Women Team Battle on 16th May. The Team came 6th in an international line-up of 15 teams.

Two WFM (Women FIDE Master) commentators from the Austrian Chess Federation provided live online analysis on Twitch of the Euro Girls and Women’s U1300 Finals: AustrianChessFederation – Twitch

The ECU Girl’s and Women’s Chess Weekend Finals Under 1300 were held online on lichess.org. The games were rapid-play, and had a time control of 7+3. That is, 7 minutes per player per game plus 3 seconds for each move.

The International Girls and Women Team Battle on 16th May featured 15 female-player teams in the European Chess Union member federations. It was a huge event with 323 players. This was an even faster pace: a blitz time control of 3+2: three minutes per player per game plus 2 seconds per move. The England Women team came 6th in the online tournament, and Maha contributed 10 points to the team’s score.

Maha Chandar runs the Chandler’s Ford Junior Chess Club and is a Hampshire county Junior team Leader and organiser.

Chandler’s Ford Chess Club’s Summer Tournament has run for many years, and this year’s event has started. Tournament organiser Malcolm Clarke has made the draw for the First Round of the Summer Tournament 2021.

The Summer Tournament sees players compete for the Kooner Cup trophy over a series of Rounds over the Summer months, at about a Round each month. The winner is presented with the trophy to hold for a year, and a Replica to keep.

In normal times the games are played over the board at the Club or mutually agreed venue. The Coronavirus pandemic hasn’t stopped the Summer Tournament from running – players can simply play their games online on lichess.org. The time control for each game remains the same: 90 minutes per player for all moves.

A Hampshire Junior chess player, Iwan Cave, has won a prize in the SCCU Jamboree online Tournament for junior chess players! The Hampshire Juniors Leader is Maha Chandar. Maha is also organiser of the Chandler’s Ford Junior Chess Club.

Iwan Cave, ‘Twickenham 2014’ on lichess.org, was joint winner of the Under 18s Board 3 Arena.

The SCCU Jamboree, 5th June 2021

The online event was the Southern Counties Chess Union Junior Jamboree, held online at lichess.org on 5th June, 11:00 – 13:30. It was open to juniors teams across England. SCCU membership wasn’t a requirement, and the SCCU invited Counties, schools, and Clubs across England. The Jamboree was organised into 4 categories: Reserves, Under 14 Minor, Under 14 Open, and Under 18. The categories were divided into Arenas by county team player Board numbers. It a massive 19-Arena Jamboree which had 279 players in all.

Teams of 6 participated in the Jamboree, from clubs across England. The Arenas were 5 round swiss tournaments. The games had a time control of 10+5: ten minutes per player per game plus 5 seconds per move.

Iwan played in the Under 18 category, Board 3 Arena. He was one of 10 players in this Arena, and scored 3.5 points. Another player, ‘I_am_17_LangF’ (lichess name) from the Merseyside Team, also scored 3.5. Controversially, a player who scored 4.5 was disqualified for cheating. Iwan of Hampshire and the Merseyside player were then awarded joint winners of that Arena, and so they will both receive medals.

Iwan has been a chess tournament prize winner before. He won a prize in the Southampton Rapid-Play Tournament at Southampton University organised by the University and Southampton Chess clubs, on 30th November 2019. He won a prize in the Under-90 graded event.

Rules / guidelines recap

Tournament organiser Steve Dunleavy’s guidelines for the Knock-out:

a) the player named first plays with white

b) all games to be played on lichess.org with both players’ clocks set at 90 minutes

c) all games to be played within the next 3 weeks (on or before Sunday 13th June)

 d) in the event of a draw players can either a) agree to play a rapid play      game on the same night duration to be agreed between/by both players or b) play another 90-minute game before the 13th June deadline. In the event of a draw colours are reversed

e) the rules of chess must be adhered to i.e. no move retake requests and none to be granted

f) can you please email me the result of your game immediately after it has been completed to allow me time to prepare and organise the Round 2 draw Sunday 13th June

g) enjoy your games and please let me know if you are struggling to             complete your game before the 13th June deadline: in fact please let me know when you have arranged to play your games so that I can easily keep track of events

A 24 hour chess marathon raising funds to support the global coronavirus response.

There is an English Chess Federation charity event this weekend: the ECF Checkmate COVID – The Rematch. It is a chess marathon over 24 hours, from 5pm tomorrow Saturday 5th June 2021 to 5pm on Sunday 6th June. It is in aid of the British Red Cross Global Coronavirus Appeal. You can enter the event on chess.com, play as many or as few of the 5 minute games as you like – and return to the tournament to continue playing some more (so you aren’t committing to playing 24 hours in one go…)

How to join

To play in the tournament, join the ECF Club on chess.com. If not on chess.com, then sign up to that. Free.

• Sign up to chess.com if you haven’t already joined them so you have a chess.com username. Free.
• Join the English Chess Federation Club on chess.com. Free.
• Join the tournament. Free, but you are encouraged to donate. Although there is no charge to enter the tournament, reigstering helps gauge numbers. Note: you will only be able to join the tournament one hour before the event starts at 5pm Saturday 5th June, and at any time thereafter during the tournament: it doesn’t matter if you miss the start, join any when during the event that suits you. Donating is easily done via the ECF registration form.

The ECF’s Checkmate Covid – The Rematch chess marathon will be played from 5.00pm on Saturday June 5th to 5.00pm on Sunday June 6th (BST). Last year’s event proved a great success, raising £12,000.00 for the British Red Cross and having a great deal of fun in the process. The whole event will be played on Chess.com, and will be open to members of the English Chess Federation Open Club.

The event, once more in aid of the British Red Cross, is a 24 hour Arena tournament where you can play as many or as few 5 minute games as you want. You can join, leave and come back to the tournament at any point. Please join the club here (free of charge) if you are not already a member in order to play in the event — https://www.chess.com/club/english-chess-federation

All members of the above Club can then join the tournament at https://www.chess.com/live#r=1187013 from 4.00pm on Saturday 5th June. Chess.com only add the ‘join’ button from one hour before the start time. You can join from that point right up to the end of the tournament – it does not matter if you miss the start.

There is no charge for entry, but registration is encouraged to help gauge numbers. Entries will be accepted on the day, with the tournament open to joining for ECF Open Club members whether or not they have registered. However, only those who have registered and donated at least £5.00 will be eligible for prizes.

There will be live commentary for most of the event by a variety of streamers as well as on the ECF’s Twitch channel, which will feature a number of notable guests, including top GMs, throughout the night. Chandler’s Ford Junior Chess Club organiser and Juniors tournament Team Leader Maha Chandar has news of a big Juniors event online this Saturday 5th June.

The event is the Southern Counties Chess Union – SCCU- Junior Jamboree. The Jamboree will be played online at 11:00 on Saturday 5th June on lichess.org.

All we need are 6 players to make a team.  There are two age groups with the younger age group split by grade:

Sam Murphy wins the 2020-21 Lichess Ladder

Sam Murphy ascended the ‘Ladder’ by challenging opponents above him on the Ladder – and beating them. He has been at the top of the Ladder for many weeks now, and has just been declared the winner. Congratulations Sam!

The Lichess Ladder

Nobby George has run the Ladder as an over-the-board event at the Chandler’s Ford Chess Club since 2017. The Covid Pandemic made over the board chess impossible, so he set up the Lichess Ladder Tournament, so named because it is played online at lichess.org. The games were still of standard length, 90 minutes per player for all moves, and the other tournament rules applied. These include a player being able to challenge an opponent up to 4 rungs above them on the Ladder. A successful challenge saw the players swap places on the Ladder; a draw or defeat for the challenger would leave the players as they were.

There were 17 players in the Chandler’s Ford Chess Club lichess Ladder.

Tuesday Arena 4th May: 16 of us participated, a great turnout. A good week for relatively new club members as Ian Partridge came top, and Michael Whitford 2nd. Regular club player Maha Chandar came 3rd, which was a personal best for her so far in these tournaments.

Thursday 5-round Swiss 6th May: 13 of us played in this tournament. Congratulations to Graham Stuart (‘WillHeSac’ on lichess) 1st, and well done Dean Shaw (‘Sheff84’ on lichess) who came second, and Rob Sims 3rd.

Tuesday Arena 11th May: 11 of us participated in this week’s tournament, a great turnout. Congratulation to winner Michael Whitford. Well done John Zastapilo 2nd, and Maha Chandar 3rd.

Thursday 5-round Swiss 13th May. 11 of us played in this tournament. Congratulations to David Culliford (‘djc202’ on lichess) 1st, and well done John Zastapilo (‘john_zed’ on lichess) who came second, and Sam Murphy 3rd.

Chandler’s Ford Central Club to re-open on Monday 17th May 2021.

The venue where the chess club is based, the Chandler’s Ford Central Club, will re-open on Monday 17th May. It will be fully open indoors but the Covid rules apply: the Rule of 6 and the 2-households Rule. Social distancing will be required and there will be table service.

Initially the Central Club’s opening hours will be 12pm to 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and 12pm to 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
